Championship Game: Rockits U. vs. Asphalt Ninjas

Coach Virg Borbo and his Rockits U. team

Expectations were high for the championship game of the 8th Annual Summer Nights Basketball League scheduled for Tuesday, August 26th between the Rockits U. and the Asphalt Ninjas. It was a night that Coach Virg Borbo and his Rockits U. team would remember forever as they coasted to a 54-27 victory.

As soon as the tip off was tossed, it was evident that the Rockits U. team was on a mission and eager to capture the "CHIP". Playing on their home court, Columbus Park, with a roster of 10 and missing only starting forward Dave Liu, this team was ready to rock. Their opponent, the Asphalt Ninjas, suited six players but were missing three starters, guards Nick Mui, Justin Kao and forward Chi Ming Pun. It was all down hill from there as there top three scorers all had to return to college for the fall 2008 semester. Without these three the game wasn't much of a game at all. The Rockits U. team hounded and pressed the Asphalt Ninjas into countless turnovers and converted them into easy layups. The tournament's outstanding player, Ian Yu, led the way with 11 pts. Stephen "Chalupa" Gong chipped in with 10 pts. with the rest of the team members all scoring to lead the balanced attack. For the Ninjas, they were led by newcomer Timmy Chin with 11 pts while Wilson Lew notched 8 pts.

With the 8th Annual Summer Nights League concluding another exciting summer hoops season, we look forward to seeing you all back in 2009. Thanks for playing.

6:10pm NY FLIGHTZ def. YL Rockits

7:05pm Rockits U. 47 def. Raging Demonz 44 semifinal
The second semifinal game was a hard fought battle that saw the still undefeated Rockits U. team squeak by the Raging Demonz 47-44. First half action saw the Rockits U. team take a halftime lead 22-18 thanks to the play of Ian Yu (just back from hoopin in Hawaii) who netted 9 pts. The Demonz were able to keep it close anchored by the play of Chris Chin who also netted 9 pts. In the second half, the remaining Rockits U. players woke up to play an astounding way. Tim "put him on your back" Chin chipped in with 10 pts. as the Rockits U. kept their margin in front by 2-5 throughout the game. For the Demonz, Chris Chin finished with 21 pts., half of those at the charity strip and Big Howie Chu contributed 11.

Gravity Is My Enemy def. Columbus Park
This game in the consolation bracket turned out to be not much of a game after all. Team Columbus Park forfeited their game to Gravity Is My Enemy and ended their summer nights league season.

7:05pm
Asphalt Ninjas 40 def. Rockits Alumni 39 (semifinal)
It was a battle throughout as both teams battled each other and attrition. The Asphalt Ninjas fielded six players, while the Rockits Alumni had seven. The game started relatively smoothly as the younger Ninja squab utilized their speed to jump out to an early 10-2 lead. Things were going well for the Ninjas thanks to Nick"the quick" Mui's seven first half points. But the Rockits Alumni clawed their back and eventually lead at the half 22-20. The second half saw the Ninjas jump out to a six point lead courtesy of the hot shooting hand of Justin Kao who banged home 3 treys. But each time the Ninjas connected, the Alumni's Eric Ouyang also connected to keep the Rockits hopes of gold alive. With less than 55 seconds left, down 1 and with the ball, the Rockits Alumni decided to hold the ball and settle for one shot. Everything played out beautifully as guard Denny Lee passed the ball just inside to Center Kevin Low with 8 seconds remaining. Kevin elevated and took a turnaround jumper that had basket made written all over it. Unfortunately, it clinked off the back rim and the Ninjas rebounded the ball with 2 seconds remaining and the chance to advance to the CHIP. Justin Kao finished with 14 pts (3 treys) and Nick "the quick" Mui chipped in with 11 today for the Asphalt Ninjas. For the Rockits Alumni, Eric Ouyang netted 11pts (3 treys), followed by Kevin Chin who finished with 9 pts.

RESULTS
Tuesday August 28, 2007 - CHAMPIONSHIP
6:30pm DEMONZ 33, ROCKITS U. 29
On paper, it didn't look like much of a battle. One, the Demonz had previously defeated Rockits U. in the prelims. Two, the Demonz were undefeated to date and boasted the summer league's leading scorer in Chris Chin and top big man in Kevin Chin.

What looked like it would be an easy victory just wasn't. Rockits U. coach Virg Borbo's game plan was to harass and tire out Chris Chin as he was the catalyst to the team. It worked perfectly as Chris was always tightly guarded by the likes of Patrick Lee, Ian Yu and others. The results showed Chris with 4 point and fouling out in regulation.

Back to the game, both teams played tenacious defense early on. The Demonz in their 2-3 zone and the Rockits U. team in their stifling man to man. The Demonz jumped out to an early 4 point lead only to have the Rockits come back and take a 17-15 halftime lead. In the second half, the lead changed hands numerous times, with Kevin Chin leading the way for the Demonz and Tim Chin for the Rockits. Both players hit the clutch baskets when the team needed a bucket. But it was the defense again that made the second half a nailbiter. With less than 2 minutes remaining and trailing by two, Denny Lee of the Demonz took his man to the goal and scored to tie the game. The ensuing foul shot was missed and resulted in the Rockits holding the ball for the last shot at the basket. After a time out to set up the play, Ian took the ball to the middle and passed outside for an jumper that wasn't taken immediately and regulation time just about to end.

The first ot saw the Rockits win the tip and control of the ball. But Denny was called for an offensive foul (hooking) as he made his move to the basket. It was just another one of the questionable offensive foul calls (7 in total) made throughout the game by the referee team. Once again, Rockits U. had the ball and waited for the last shot. But to no avail, they lost the ball in the final seconds and another ot was looming.

The second ot mirrored the first as the Rockits again won the tip and brought the ball down only to miss a shot and the Rockits securing the rebound and yet another chance for the final shot. Once again, Ian Yu took control for the Rockits and milked the clock until 10 seconds remained before he made his move to the basket. Once again, the Rockits came up empty with time running out.

In the third ot, Ian anticipated the back tip from the Demonz and stole the ball and scored a layup to give the Rockits a 2-point lead. Kev Chin came right back and hit a shot and we were tied again. With the Rockits inbouding the ball, Kev Chin of the Demonz intercepted the pass. As the Demonz were swinging the ball around, the ball was almost stolen until it wound up back in the hands of Kevin Chin who drove from the right wing to the middle of the 3 second lane and pulled up to hit the soft jumper and a 2-point lead for the Demonz. With less than 20 seconds remaining, the Rockits pushed the ball up quickly only to lose possession on an errant pass. After fouling quickly, the Demonz hit two free throws to seal the victory, 33-29. Kevin Chin led the way for the Demonz with 11pts and Tim Chin led the Rockits with 9 pts.

Demonz 42 vs. Flights 32
The young ISS Flights come into this game 0-2 and hungry for the win because their playoff hopes depend on it. On the other hand the Demonz came into this game with only 6 guys and also, were in a comfort zone. Still sleeping through most of the first half we see the Flights take advantage and take a 25-23 half time lead, Peter Mei with 11 points. In the second half the Demonz still seem unstable on offense but hold their own on defense limiting the Flights to only 9 second half points. Luckily for the Demonz their defense came through for them this game and we saw them finish the game 42-32. DEMONZ Kevin Chin lead all scorers with 17 points.

7:05pm
USAB 39 vs Columbus Park 33
In our last game for tonight we have Columbus Park in search of their first win for this years summer nights against the USAB Warriors with a team of more than 5 guys. Unfortunately for Columbus Park they are still missing guys and only have 6. From the start Columbus looks like they are trying to let USAB know that this is their park and they are going to redeem themselves for last weeks outing. Mongol and Elliot combined for 4 threes in the first half and gave CP a lead, 21-17. The second half becomes a nightmare for the Columbus Park team. USAB starts to pressure them and the whole team starts to fold, and give away their hard earned lead. Kevin Chang with a pair of triples and an and1 gives USAB the momentum to push passed Columbus and take the victory away from them, 39-33.

Tuesday August 7th, 2007
6:10pm
Rockits U 61 vs. Ballaholics 30
At the start of this one the Ballaholics seemed to be out of this one from the start, they barely warmed up and as they were going to start doing lay ups the ref blew the whistle to start the game. It was not a cool summer night like it was for every other game we had so far so that also played a part in the lack luster play of both teams. But the heat did not stop Stephen Gong as he was doing it all from hitting jumpers to getting And1s, scoring 13 points in the first half opposed to the Ballaholics' 16. The second half was pretty much the same story for the Ballaholics. The pressure defense by the Rockits had the team out of sync. Although Stephen only scored 2 points in the second half Timothy Chin and Ian Yu put in work and the three combined for 37 points. Chaun Chen led for the Ballaholics with 13 points. Final 61-30

7:05pm
CEM Titans 38, Technicians 35
With both teams tied at 1-1 we should see a competitive game as both teams want to make be in the top teams to make the playoffs. Both teams came out ready to play with some tough defense that led to a low scoring half 19-18 in the favor of the Titans. In the second half we saw more of the same intensity, but then a little careless play from the Technicians that turn into transition lay ups for the Titans. Guard/forward Way Chang and Joe Ng knocked down 3 triples in the clutch moments of the game to give the Titans a lead over the Technicians. The Titans began to eat some clock and eventually close out the game winning 38-35.

Thursday August 2nd, 2007 (July 19th games)
6:10pm Demonz 64, Street Dreams 31
In this matchup we see the Street Dreams try to gain back some confidence by picking up a win tonight against the Demonz who will look to close out a team and keep them down when they have the lead. With both teams ready to compete the Demonz get started quick and go up fast. Although Street Dreams were putting the ball in the hoop, turnovers haunted them again and the three ball killed them. Chris Chin had 4 first half threes finishing the half with 16, and Rick Wong had 2 threes himself. Street Dreams saw themselves in the hole 34-22. In the second half we see the team was totally out of it. They could not find the flow and were seeing themselves falling behind huge. The Demonz kept on going with the threes as Tiffany Lee hit 3 of her own and Virgilio Borbo hitting 1. This was a bad second half for the Street Dreams finishing with 9 points for the half leading to a blowout 64-31. The Demonz combined for 10 three pointers for the game with Chris Chin leading the way with 26 points.

7:05pm Sentinels 51, USAB Warriors 37
With the USAB Warriors showing up with only 5 guys their first game and pulling through with a victory against last years' runner up, who knows what to expect this game. The Sentinels with experienced players that know how it feels to win like Wilson Lew, Jimmy Lam, and Jeff Chin against the USAB young energetic group. The first half was tight with both teams playing hard D and competing. Wilson led the Sentinels with 10 points and USAB's Brandon followed with 9, with the Sentinels leading by 2 at half. In the second half sharp shooting by Wilson Lew and dumping it down to big man Jeff Chin gave the Sentinels the slight advantage. But with Sean getting into it by driving through the lane strong getting fouls and hitting his mid range, USAB saw themselves still fighting and keeping them close despite having 5 guys. A couple of missed shots, bad passes and the Warriors saw their confidence falling and Sentinels pulling away with Jeff Chin and Jimmy Lam cleaning up on the inside. Their lack of size definitely killed them this game as the Warriors fell to the Sentinels 51-47.

Tuesday, July 31, 2007
6:10pm
Rockits U. 37, Street Dreams 25
Tonights first game of the night is a evenly matched game with both relying on their jumpers, speed, and dribble penetration to score buckets. In the first half the Rockits U. seemed like they had thing under control because of their pressure defense, but that just led to scrambling and not recovering on D that eventually allowed the Street Dream players to get open lay ups at the rim. The game was up and down as we expected it to be and was neck and neck until a three from Josh Pena and Eric Ouyang gave the Rockits a little breathing room at half 20-14. The second half the Rockits U. defense was there for each other and stopped giving up easy baskets that opened up a double digit lead for them. But Street Dreams will not go to rest, Lawerence and Kevin kept attacking the rim and got to the line several times and hitting all their free throws. In the end turnovers killed the Street Dreams and the Rockits hit their free throws to keep this game out of reach, with a final of 37-25. Josh Pena was the high man with 13 points.

7:05pm USAB Warriors 44, Technicians 41

Thursday, July 26, 2007 (revised)
6:10pm
CEM Titans 29, Columbus Park 25
With the park's team anxious to finally play their first game that got delayed twice due to rain outs, we expected Columbus Park to come out with a ton of energy and determination. Since only half their team came to the game that idea seemed to be washed away but they still competed. Joe Ng led the way for the Titans with three triples, also, Daniel M. caused a couple of turnovers that led to some easy fast break baskets. But, the park will not let their crowd down as Michael "Mongol" Louie answered back with 11 first half points to make it a 2 point game at half, 19-17. In the second half of the game we see tired legs start kicking in on the hometown Columbus Park team and they showed it by shooting 4-12 from the charity stripe as a team in the second half, opposed to the Titans 4-7. Nevertheless, with a minute to go they were still up by 2 points, only to see that lead turn into a 1 point deficit because of a big three by Way Chang. Another crucial turnover by Columbus gave the Titans a 2 point advantage. Columbus calls a timeout for the last shot and potential basket to tie the game, and we all know who the ball is going to. CEM Titans played Mongol well and forced him into a bad move leading into the game sealing free throws. 29-25 CEM Titans take it. Titans combined for 5 three pointers in the game with only one person on the team that did not score. Mongol lead the way for Columbus with 17 points.

7:05pm Demonz 52, Ballaholics 43
In this game we have the Demonz another team that hasn't played their first game yet due to the rain outs versus the Ballaholics, who showed that they can ball against the Flights two days ago. In the first half we saw a one man wrecking crew. Victor from the Demonz took apart the defense of the Ballaholics with hustle plays, rebounding, blocked shots, and even a near put back dunk. He single-handedly outscored the Ballaholics in the first half by 1 point that lead to the Demonz being up big, 39-23. With the crowd getting bored and thinking this game is over, we saw the Demonz thought that it was over too. Ballaholics woke up and shooter Ericson Chee and Ron Cheung combining for 23 points to narrow the gap. But that came a little to late, because of their slow start time came ticking down to haunt them leaving them no chance to come back and taking their first L, 52-43. Victor the superstar for todays first half finished with 23 points, 0 in the 2nd half.

Ballaholics 46, NY Flightz 40
This game started off with both team not playing much defense and trading alot of baskets. Number 32 Ericson Chee led the way with his hot shooting from the baseline and perimeter, As the Ballaholics had trouble beating the pressure defense and guarding Big Man George Tang. Also, Siukwo Cheng of the Ballaholics had a number of fast break layups in the first half leading to a first half score of 24-14, Ballaholics in the lead. In the second half we see the Ballaholics hold their 9-10 point lead with Ericson and Siukwo still scoring at will. But the Flights will have an answer, down by 9 with less than a minute left Stanley Yip hits 3-pointer plus the foul. He misses the free throw but the rebound is controlled by the Flights to hit off Jason Wu for another 3 point shot. A line violation on the inbounds give the Flights the ball back, but only to throw a careless turnover and force themselves to foul and allow the Ballaholics to seal the game. Ericson and Siukwo led the way with 18 and 13 points. George Tang and Jason Wu combined for 17 points. Final 46-40 Ballaholics.

7:05pm
Technicians 43, Sentinels 40
In this matchup we see the Sentinels come off very sluggish and slow, and the Technicians capitalized and jumped out to a quick 14-3 lead. Spark off the bench Justin Kao came in and exploded for a couple easy layups, jumpers, and assists. The only one from the Sentinels that could get anything going was Jimmy Lam with 8 first half points. At half it was 28-17 Technicians seems like their cruisin' to an easy victory. I guess the Technicians thought that as well but Sentinels had other plans. In the second half their Bigs stepped up on both the offensive and defensive end. Hiram Chan and Jeff Chin combined for a second half total of 16 points and shooters Wilson Lew and Jimmy Lam got open. The Technicians see their lead dwindling down so they slow their game down and eat some clock. They nail free throws to keep a slim lead of three points. With less than a minute left, down by 3, The Sentinels get a crucial defensive stop and look for a quick timeout, only to lead to a technical foul because they had none left. That gave the Technicians 2 shots and the ball and victory was theres. Jimmy Lam and Hiram Chan led with 13 and 12, for the Technicians it was a balanced attack as every player scored a basket. Final Technicians, 43-40.

Sentinels 28, CEM Titans 23
To kick off the Summer Nights League we have a new team to the league the CEM Titans and The 2004 Summer Nights champions the Sentinels. Both teams displayed good defense as well as some first game jitters with a halftime score of 15-12, Sentinels lead. In the second half the Sentinels with scorers like Wilson Lew, Jimmy Lam and Big Man Hiram Chan increased their lead. Nevertheless, with hard work and a couple of hustle plays the Titans saw themselves back in it, but luckily for Sentinels Jimmy Lam came up with a key block when they were up by only three to lead to the free throws that sealed the game. Wilson Lew with 14 points led the Sentinels to a close 28-23 win.

7:05pm Rockits U. 42, NY Flightz 15
From the tip-off the defending champions, Rockits U. looked like they were trying to send a message. The team came out hard and hungry and took a commanding lead with their full court man to man pressure defense and speed. The ISS Flights couldn't handle the pressure this game and saw themselves running into a blowout with a halftime score of 21-8. Second half was pretty much the same story as guard Joshua Pena was flying past defenders throughout the whole game with a team high 14 points. Peter Lee and Jason Ruan combined for 8 points and that concluded the first day of summer nights with a final of 42-15.

6:30pm CHAMPIONSHIP GAME - ROCKITS U. 35, RDH 30

2006 SUMMER NIGHTS LEAGUE CHAMPIONS - ROCKITS U.
(Coach Virgilio Borbo in the light green threads)

Championship game night is truly special as both teams, Rockits U and RDH were clearly a notch above the rest of this year's select field. Another similarity was that both teams relied heavily on their superb guard play. RDH with Heng Chen and Peter Mei and the Rockits U. with Ian Yu, Patrick Lee and Joshua Pena.

championship game action - no layup rule in effect

After the tip-off, the Rockits U. team jumped out to an early 8 point lead thanks to a couple of easy baskets by Ian Yu (10 pts - MVP) and a trey by Joshua Pena (12 pts). But true to form, RDH came storming back to cut the deficit to two by halftime led by Will Pun and Heng Chen. With a championship on the line, the second half saw both teams step it up on the defensive end forcing numerous turnovers and missed shots. But the momentum of the game swung in favor of the Rockits as Patrick Lee (tournament coordinator) made two clutch defensive plays, first by taking a charge and then stealing the rock. Sandwich in a trey by Pat and the Rockits U. team was on its way to it's first summer nights league championship. Final score: ROCKITS U. 35, RDH 30.

LEAGUE MVP: IAN YU, Rockits U.

Congratulations to the Coach Virgilio Borbo and the NY Rockits organization on their 5th Summer Nights League title (2001,2002,2004,2005,2006).

SCHEDULE: July 18 - August 22, 2006 - COLUMBUS PARK

Tuesday, July 18, 2006 (scorekeeping: Rockits U.)
6:30pm
RDH 32, Columbus Park 29

On a scorching summer night, Columbus Park and RDH looked to begin the Summer Nights League on the right foot. This was a game of runs, as both teams exchanged leads several teams throughout the game. RDH started the game energized and had a couple of easy lay-ups for the early lead. However, with a couple of steals and lay-ups of their own, Columbus Park quickly tied up the game and took a 3 point lead at the half. The second half proved to be an interesting one as the lead for neither team exceeded 5 points. RDH's good shooting and rebounding continued to keep them in the game, as Columbus Park countered with easy baskets in the paint. The game came down to the wire with Columbus Park up by one. But a poised RDH team swung the ball patiently until hitting the open man for a 20 footer, and putting them up by two. On the very next play, Columbus Park had a chance to tie the game with two free throws. But only managing to hit 1 out of 2 at the line, RDH was able to secure their season opener with the final score 32-29.

6:15pm
Rockits M & M 53, C.A.S.E. Cougars 35

The contest was between two teams who knew how each other played. The Rockits intended to stick to their game plan, give the ball to big man Howie Chu down low. On the other side, the Case Cougars wanted to play an uptempo game and look for easy fast break points. As the game began, it was clear that the Cougars were not going to back down despite being the underdog. The Cougars were able force some early turnovers to take the lead. However, after taking a timeout, the Rockits regrouped and settled down. They were able to control the boards and force some turnovers of their own, as the Rockits regained the lead with the score of 27-15 at the half. Tim Li of the Cougars kept them in it by scoring 10 points, 14 in the game. However, the spotlight was on Howie Chu as he got secured rebounds on both sides of the court with no answer from the smaller Cougars. Howie Chu finished the game with 17 points to lead the Rockits to a 53-35 victory.

We have seen these games many times, a team consisting of young players (17 and under) against players who are older but have much more experience and basketball IQ. The young Rockits team looked to use their speed to their advantage as they played a full court man to man defense and to push the ball. On the other hand, team Comeback looked to slow down the pace and play a half court game. However, both teams struggled to score as we had a low scoring first half from both sides. Despite the slow first half the second half quickly escalated to an interesting game with a dramatic finish. Team Comeback capitalized on forced turnovers and second chance points as the Rockits continued to play an uptempo game to keep them in the game. The game would come down to the last minute of the game. With the scored tied at 31, the Rockits trying to hold for the last shot carelessly turns the ball over, and results in a 2-point lead for team Comeback. On the ensuing play, Peter from the Rockits makes a strong move to the basket and draws a hard foul-later deemed a flagrant foul! Peter calmly sinks the two free-throws and the Rockits maintain the possession. However, the Rockits could not use the extra possession to their advantage as the game goes to Overtime. With less than 20 seconds left of the first overtime, the Rockits are up 1. However, Tony Wong from team Comeback is fouled and awarded two free-throws. With the pressure on, he was only able to hit 1 of 2. The game would be sent to a second overtime. We skip ahead to the last 10 seconds, the Rockits are down by 3 and have possession of the ball. After passing the ball around the perimeter, team Comeback carelessly fouls the jump-shooter while attempting a 3-point shot. The shooter is award 3 free-throws and a chance to tie the game. With fatigue setting in and pressure forever rising, he only hits 2 out of 3. The Rockits foul, but would lose a tough one 43-30. Jeff Chin led team Comeback with 14 points; Peter led the Rockits with 11 points, followed by George with 10.

Rockits M&M 44, YL Rockits 27

A contest between two fellow Rockit teams, this game became lopsided quickly. With Tommy Zheng leading the fast breaks and Howie Chu securing the paint, Rockits M&M quickly took the lead. Bart, coming off the bench, scored 7 quick points helping the Rockits M&M to a 23-10 halftime lead. In the second half, we would continue to see the Rockits M&M show the younger Rockits who's boss as they picked apart a zone defense from the YL Rockits. The final score was 44-27. Howie Chu scored 9 points in the second half, leading the team with 13 points, followed by Victor Ng with 8. On the other side, George Tang led his team with 8 points.

7:05pm
Comeback 38, C.A.S.E. Cougars 19

The bigger and more experienced team Comeback looked to go 2-0 against the Case Cougars-who are seeking for their first win. Team Comeback's size definitely helped them start the game right. The Case Cougars could not find a way to get an easy basket as they were forced to shoot jump shots. Team Comeback were able to keep the Cougars to only 8 points in the first half as they led 17-8. The Cougars would come out of the half with a full court man to man, but team Comeback was able to pass their way out of the press. Team Comeback would eventually win the game 38-19.

Rockits U. 57, RDH 48

On a hot and humid day, we have the Rockits U. team playing their first game against RDH who is looking to go 2-0. As both teams struggled to find their rhythm, RDH's front line looked to pound it into the undersized Rockits U team, with two quick and1 and 1's to begin the game. However, the Rockits utilized their speed and agility, and were able to get themselves back into the game by hitting 5 three-pointers in the first half to take a marginal 7 point lead at the half. In the second half, the Rockits came out on point as they were able to push the lead to 15. Despite a 15 point deficit and what may turn out to be a blowout, RDH never quit. Big men, Steve and Ken, from RDH continued to control the boards and got many second chance points. With Jack Ma of RDH taking over the offense-9 points in the second half- and capitalizing on careless turnovers by the Rockits, RDH was able to bring the lead down to 4 points with 2 minutes to go. However, this would be as close as RDH would get as the Rockits hit crucial free-throws at the end to seal the game. Ian Yu, Josh Pena, and Patrick Lee combined for 47 points for the Rockits, with Ian Yu leading the way with 18 points. Jack Ma led RDH with 12 points. The highest scoring game so far this summer with a final score of 57- 48.

6:15pm
YL Rockits 42, C.A.S.E. Cougars 41

Without leading scorers Peter and George for the Rockits, who would pick up the slack? As the game started the Cougars definitely looked like the sharper team. Creating numerous turnovers and finishing fast breaks, the Cougars made the game look easy. However, the Rockits finally resolved their issues and were able to make a run of their own to tie up the game. The Cougars would finish the half on a 5-0 run to take a 20-17 lead. The second half became a contest between Tim Li of the Cougars and Kerry of the Rockits. The two would exchange baskets on both sides of the court. Kerry was able to secure numerous offensive rebounds and scored easily for a total of 9 second half points ( 14 in all,) while Tim slashed and shot his way to 9 points (16 total.) Despite Tim and the rest of the Cougar's persistence, they would lose by 1 point in overtime- the final score 42-41.

7:05pm
Rockits M & M 35, Comeback 33

Next we have two teams trying to maintain their perfect record and to be the first place seed in their bracket. The Rockits were the more energetic team in the beginning of the game as they opened up with an 8-0 lead. But living up to their team name, slowly but surely the more experienced players of team Comeback would quickly catch up and make it a game. With the weather still over 90 degrees at 7 o'clock, it was no wonder both teams struggled to score. It was a tight game down to the wire. With a 5 point lead, team Comeback was hoping the clock would speed up. But with a steal, lay-up and then a 3-pointer, the Rockits tied the game again. Team Comeback would eventually take a 1 point lead with 10 seconds left. With 10 seconds left in the game, Rockits looked to go down low to Howie Chu. And in desperate need of a basket, the big man goes up, takes the foul and powers in the game winning basket! The Rockits would take a thriller 35-33 and the sole possession of 1st place seeding in bracket B.

Rockits U. - Columbus Park

Despite the 100 degree weather, the bench at Columbus Park was filled with spectators to watch a highly anticipated game between the Rockits U and Columbus Park. This would be a rematch of last year's thrilling semi-finals game, where the Rockits narrowly escaped with a victory. Once the tip was up, everyone could tell Columbus Park was serious. Playing a Box-1 defense on Joshua Pena, they were determined to make someone else beat them. Columbus Park quickly built a 10-0 lead. The Rockits, realizing the game was slipping away from them, finally played with some energy to make it an interesting game again. At the half, Columbus Park was holding a 1-point lead-19-18. The second half started out differently as the Rockits offense started to pick up, led by Ian Yu's 12 points(19 total) and Josh Pena's 9 points(13 total.) On the other side, Shing and Dave from Columbus Park would not let the game slip away contributing 11 points each. But ultimately it would take a clutch 3-point shot with time expiring by Michael "Mongol" Louie to send the game to overtime. In overtime, easy baskets by Dave and Shing kept Columbus in the game. But with a 3 point deficit, Columbus missed a 3 pointer at the buzzer to give the Rockit's a 3 point victory in another exciting summer nights game.

Tuesday, August 8, 2006 (Interdivision)
6:15pm
Columbus Park - C.A.S.E. Cougars - Group B (4th seed)

In the first of two interdivision games, we have Columbus Park vs. the Case Cougars. The Cougars playing without regular starters Way and Tim, someone else would have to step up in order for the Cougars to have a winning chance. From the start of the game, Columbus' offense controlled the game. Shing of Columbus Park had his way with the Cougars offensively, grabbing offensive rebound after offensive rebound and scoring on easy lay-ins. His hustle earned him 14 first half points. However, careless turnovers and a lackadaisical defense prevented the early blowout as Columbus had a 10 point lead at the half. David Kong of the Cougars was scoring inside and out trying to keep his team in it with 12 first half points. More careless turnovers plagued Columbus in the beginning of the second half. With the Cougars capitalizing on these turnovers, they would cut the lead down to five. However, that would be as close as the Cougars would get. Michael Louie started getting serious. Along with a couple of steals, he exploded for 13 quick points, highlighted by his fast break. He would finish the game with 23 points, followed by Shing with 18. David Kong of the Cougars led his team with 14 points.

7:05pm
RDH 49, Young Life Rockits 18 - Group B (3rd seed)

RDH vs. Young Life Rockits. This game would turn ugly quick. The undersized Rockits team struggled to score against the bigger RDH team. However, it was the turnovers that allowed RDH to pull away quickly. Going on a 17-3 run to begin the game, RDH would hold a 21-6 lead at the half. The second half proved to be much the same as the first. Good shooting from Victor Yip of RDH expanded the lead to over 20. RDH would cruise to a 49-18 victory.

6:15pm
RDH 53, CASE Cougars 19

After a commanding victory against the YL Rockits, RDH tried to use their momentum against the Case Cougars to advance into the semis. However because RDH wasn't really taking the game very seriously, the Cougars were able to keep themselves in the game with a balanced scoring attack. The Cougars were only down 5 points at the half. Despite this 2 possession deficit, the Cougars were not able to get it together the second half, offensively or defensively. RDH was playing with more intensity as they started to pull away early in the second half. RDH's defense limited the Cougars to only two second half points. Led by the scoring of Will and Victor of RDH, they will advance to the semis facing the undefeated Rockits M&M.

7:05pm
Team Comeback 33, Columbus Park 18

In the other quarter final game, it was Columbus Park and team Comeback. After team Comeback scored a couple of early baskets, Columbus Park quickly changed their defense to a man-to-man defense. This proved to be an effective move as team Comeback had its difficulties scoring. But Columbus Park would have its own shooting difficulties. Offensively, Columbus Park just could not get it going. Despite Columbus’ horrific shooting, they were only down 6 points at the half, 12-6. In the second half, team Comeback would get some baskets from Tat to give them some more breathing room. Realizing it was now or never, Columbus Park started playing with a sense of motivation as they started full court pressing team Comeback. They were able to cut down the lead down to 10 points with 6 minutes to go. But good foul shooting from Tony Wong would seal the deal - 9/10 from the free-throw line for the game. Team Comeback would win the game 33-18 as they play the Rockits U in the semis.

Tuesday, August 15, 2006 - Semifinals
6:30pm
Rockits U 36, Team Comeback 29

Both teams tried to advance to the finals as this semi-finals game went underway. Determined to make someone else beat them-for the second straight week-a team would go box-and-one against Joshua Pena and the Rockits. However, this week the Rockits were playing more effectively against this defense as they found the open players on the perimeter. The Rockits would go on a 11-0 run to start the game, limited by their own turnovers The Rockits would hold a 10 point lead throughout most of the game until ten minutes left of the second half. Then one basket at a time, team Comeback would slowly get back into the game. With about 3 minutes left, Comeback trimmed the lead down to 2 points. But two big offensive rebounds by Stephen Gong and Patrick Lee led to a 6 point lead and would force team Comeback to foul. Free-throws made would seal the game as the Rockits move on to win 36-29.

Thursday, August 17, 2006 - Semifinals
6:30pm
RDH -38, Rockits M&M 35

The undefeated Rockits M&M were the favorites in this game looking to head into the finals. At the start of the game it would sure look this way with the Rockits striking first and their defense stifling RDH's offense. But soon enough, RDH made its own adjustments to the Rockits 3-2 defense as they sent cutters from the weak side to expose the middle. The Rockits took a marginal lead of 2 points at the half, led by Victor Ng with 8 points. Will of RDH paced them with 7 points. Both teams were trading baskets during the second half. Two 3 pointers by the Rockits would be matched thanks to Jack Ma's good shooting. The difference in the game was RDH's hustle getting numerous offensive rebounds for second chance points. Missing several 3 pointers in the final minute, the Rockits would be forced to foul. But Peter Mei calmly hit the freethrows to help the RDH escape with a 3 point victory. Will of RDH had 11 points to lead his team. Victor Ng and Tommy Zheng both had 11 points to lead their team in scoring.

2005 GOLD DIVISION CHAMPIONS - NY ROCKITS AIA

Chinatown's best ballers were on display as the 2004 defending champions, NY Rockits were matched up once again with the Homecrest Cruisers in the Championship game of the 2004 Summer Nights League. Expectations were high as both teams usually play above the rim (ha ha) as these teams play against each other numerous times during the year.

The Rockits came out shootin as they hit their first four shots to take a 8-0 lead before George Chan would answer for the Cruisers. But it was the Rockits who used their speed on the defensive end to nullify their height disadvantage that provided the spark. With the guards helping out down low against the Cruisers Twin Towers of George and Tony, the Rockits were able to force bad passes and convert steals into points. For the Rockits in the first half, Chris Chin led the way 12 pts which included an electrifying spin on a drive to the basket that left the fans screaming OOH's and AAH's. Rich San Pedro chipped in 6 pts to lead the Rockits to a 29-20 lead. Everyone knew the Cruisers weren't going to stand for this as they were outplayed in the first half. But in the second half, the Chris Chin highlight reel was in full swing as he hit two treys to extend the lead to 15 pts. From there, the Rockits carefully spread their offense around and quietly attacked the basket looking for easy buckets or fouls. Chris Chin finished with 26 pts and was selected the M.O.P. (most outstanding player) of the game. Kevin Chin chipped in with 10 pts (6-6 free throws), Ming Wang 8 pts, and Big Ed Chan tallied 5 pts and numerous hustle plays. For the Cruisers, George Chan netted 15 pts before fouling out and Tony Hu had 11 pts.

Congratulations to the NY Rockits on their 4th Summer Nights League title (2001,2002,2004,2005).

As soon as the game looked like a blowout, the Cougars would come clawing it's way back. By halftime, Columbus Park was only nursing a 24-18 lead. Within 2 minutes after the second half started, the Cougars quickly tied the game. Billy Wu hit a couple of shots and finished with 15 pts. The remainder of the second half, was a see saw affair as both teams had the lead only to let the other team catch up. Leadin the way for the Columbus Park team was "Mongol" who finished with 9 pts (three treys) and Eliot Wong also tallied 9 pts. For the Cougars, big man Howie Chu contributed 14 pts. PLAYOFFS ROUND
Thursday, August 18th, 2005 at Columbus Park
6:15pm Semifinal: Game 1 -
NY ROCKITS AIA 39 vs. MAXIMUM OUTPUT 34
Making it into the semifinals is great, but surviving and advancing to the Championship is better. The NY Rockits AIA survived on this night after trailing the entire game to eke out a 5 point victory over Maximum Output. Maximum Output jumped out to an early lead of 4 points and established the tempo of the game which caught the NY Rockits off guard. At halftime, Maximum Output led 21-16 with seven players contributing points. In the second half, every time the Rockits clawed their way back to within one point, Xinang Chen (9 pts.) of Maximum Output would answer with a basket to reestablish the lead. It wasn't until Brian Wong of the Rockits sank a trey to give them a one point lead with a little less than 3 minutes left that finally changed the momentum of the game. Brian finished with 10 pts (3 treys), while Kevin Chin put in another workmanlike effort with 12 pts and Chris Chin added 10pts.

Players Injured/did not play: MAX - Wilson Lew, Eddie Wang; ROCKITS-Ming Wang, Kenny Yu

7:05pm Semifinal: Game 2 - USAB WARRIORS 26 vs. HOMECREST CRUISERS 38
With the first game coming down to the wire, the second game promised to be just the same. The 1st seed, USAB Warriors looked to continue their winning ways while the Homecrest Cruisers were looking to prove that their 1-3 prelim record was a fluke. The game started a little later than usual and that may have affected the quality of play in the first half as their were probably a combined 15+ turnovers. Both team looked sluggish, forcing up shots, and throwing the ball away. USAB definitely looked out of the ordinary as a couple of their top players, Brandon Chock and Zachary Liu were missing in action. Add the fact that the coach, Yen Liu wasn't in attendance and that spells trouble. With the low scoring first half over, it began to get darker quick. But it didn't affect the Cruisers as much as they increase their lead to as much as 19 pts in the second half. The rout was definitely on. George Chan led the way finishing with 12 pts. many of which were take it to the rack layups in the paint. A rejuvenated Chris Liu shot lights out in the second half and finished with 14 pts. It seemed the darker it got the better he shot ( I told him he shot like he got Lasix Surgery). He attributed his good shooting by coming out late one night this week at around midnight just to work on shooting at his demon - Columbus Park. Leading the way for USAB was Nick Mui who finished with 13 pts.

CHAMPIONSHIP GAME - NY ROCKITS (43) vs. NY Kings (20)
written by Pierre Nguyen

On one side we had the unknown Kings trying to make a name for themselves coming off their upset win over the Ducks. On the other side we had the heavily favored New York Rockits. Would the Kings be able to pull off another upset? Playing with a five to seven man roster all summer the Rockits were able to go undefeated. Now here we were at the championship game and there were nine players on the sideline. Would this change the game plan? Would some players be upset at decreased playing time? NO!

In what was the Rockits most complete game of the summer, they dominated the Kings. The Rockits suffocating defense led by Big Ed Chan held the Kings to 9 first half points. And on the other side, there was no answer for the balanced attack of the Rockits led by Brian Wong who was on target from beyond the arc with 12 pts. In addition, Kevin Chin dominated the paint with 9 pts., followed by tournament MVP Rich San Pedro also adding 9 pts. For the Kings, Will Cheung and Leighton Kuet tried their best to keep their team in the game but their efforts proved fruitless. Congratulations to the New York Rockits on their 43-20 victory.

6:15pm Semifinal: Game 1 - KINGS (32) vs. NY DUCKS (28)
We all saw Puerto Rico beat United States on Saturday and this game had the same overtones as the highly favored Ducks were defeated by the up and coming Kings to advance to the Championship game next Tuesday. Even before the tip, there were signs that the Ducks weren't going to have an easy game as Alex Stewart, there man in the middle hadn't arrived yet. Both teams started slowly with poor shooting and numerous turnovers before Will Cheung of the Kings started to showcase his talents. Will scored the first eight points for his team on his way to 12 by halftime. Wilson Lew tried to keep his team close by scoring 8 pts in the first half but his team still trailed 20-11. The struggles for both teams continued in the second half. The Ducks continued to pressure the Kings and was able to cut the lead to four points on two occasions. However, after each try to narrow the deficit, the Kings would respond by getting an easy basket on there offensive end. When the buzzer sounded, the surprising Kings upset the Ducks. For the Ducks, they were led by the presence of Will Cheung, who finished with 16 pts, 12 rebounds, and 3 blocked shots. Pacing the Ducks again was Wilson Lew who finished with 14 pts.
7:05pm Semifinal: Game 2 -
NY ROCKITS(49) vs. NY ASIAN KNIGHTS(40)
The upset earlier was definitely on everyone's mind. Could the Asian Knights pull off their second straight upset against a higher seeded team? Right away, the Knights took charge and built up a 10-2 lead. The Rockits missed some shots but were also guilty of committing 5 turnovers to begin the game. The Rockits weren't looking too good but they somehow managed to tie the game 15-15 due largely to there stellar defense. By halftime, the Rockits clinged onto a 22-19 lead. The second half action saw the Rockits at there best as they played better defensively and forced the Asian Knights into numerous turnovers. The lead grew up to 16 pts thanks largely to the stellar play of Rich SanPedro, Ming Wang and Victor Tang. The Asian Knights fought back on numerous lines only to get rebuffed again. Jeff Namgoon led the way for the Knights with 10 pts. For the Rockits, Rich San Pedro finished with a game high 21 pts and Ming Wang tallied 10 pts.

6:15pm Quarterfinal 1 - 2nd A -
KINGS (36) vs. 3rd B - NY CRUISERS (30)
With a semifinal berth on the line to the victorious team, the Kings decided that they wanted to advance and eked out a 36-30 win over the Cruisers. With both teams struggling from the field, whoever played the most defense was certain to be the winner. Both teams played at a feverish pace throughout the game with the Cruisers constantly trying to play catch up. But when you are playing without two of your three best players (George-sprained ankle, Tony-came late) it's hard to make up a deficit. Leading the way for the Kings is new-pickup Will Cheung (8 pts) and Joe Wu (8 pts). For the Cruisers, they were led by the hot shooting David Cheng (18 pts).

7:05pm Quarterfinal 2-3rd A-
ASIAN KNIGHTS (38) vs. 2nd B -Maximum Output(34)
With the first game of the night already over, Maximum Output had a birds eye view of the upset by the Kings over the Cruisers. They definitely didn't want to be put in the same position. Maximum Output led throughout the game only to succumb to a furious comeback by the Asian Knights who managed to outscore Maximum Output in the second half. The entire team played magnificently as evidenced by the balanced scoring attack led by Jeff Namgoon (7 pts), Leading the way for the Maximum Output team was Yuming Li who finished with 12 pts.

Intergroup NY Rockits AIA (55) vs. NY Ducks (49)
Which group was stronger, A or B? If it came down to one game, then you would choose the Rockits based on their 55-49 victory over the Ducks. Looking at both teams before tip off, the team favored to win was undoubtedly the Ducks as they had a full squad led by their two best players, Wilson Lew and Alex Stewart. On the other end, the Rockits suited up only five players the entire game and were missing many of their lightning quick guards. Whoever said "It's not what you have on paper but how you play the game" is absolutely right. Anyhow, the game was close throughout, with the Rockits jumping out to a 27-19 halftime lead. You knew the Ducks were going to make a second half push and they did just that as they came as close as three points on two occasions only to succumb at the end. Leading the comeback charge was none other than Wilson Lew (20 pts) and Mike Chan (10pts). The Rockits were led by a balanced attack from Brian Wong (15 pts), Victor Tang (15 pts), Kevin Chin (14 pts),Rich San Pedro (9 pts) and Evan Luo (2pts) aka Ben Wallace.

7:05pm Intergroup (2nd A - Kings)(47) vs. (2nd B - Maximum Output)(38)
The battle of the second place teams materialized as promised with the Kings holding onto a 47-38 victory. Maximum Output hung tough until the last two minutes of the game trailing only by 3 points. But playing without their big man, Jason Yee and guard Can Zhu certainly came back to haunt them. Veteran hoopster, Kenny led Maximum Output with 13 pts. The Kings were paced by Will Cheung
(12 pts), playing his first game in the league this summer and Johnny Leung, 10 pts.

NY Ducks (39) vs. Maximum Output (33)
It was a battle of the undefeateds, as the Ducks and Maximum Output were vying for the top spot in there group. As the more established team, the Ducks jumped to an early lead by gambling for steals and it paid off as they led at halftime 21-12. Stunned by their own lethargic play, Maximum Output played there way back into the game late in the second half due to the play of big man, Jason Yee who finished with 9 pts and 11 rebounds. A couple of clutch treys by Can Zhu and Yuming Lig pulled them to with 5 pts but that would be as close as they would get. The Ducks held onto win the game. Once again, Wilson Lew led the team with 12 pts followed by Alex Stewart with 8 pts.

7:05pm
NY Rockits AIA (48) vs. NY Asian Knights (39)
The Rockits, playing with a more complete roster of eight players jumped out to an early lead of eight points and carried that momentum to a 9 point victory over the Asian Knights. The Rockits were led by the guard play of Ming Wang who finished with 13 pts and Kwok Fung who tallied 11 pts. Big man Kevin Chin netted 9 pts and 12 rebounds. NY Rockits AIA (47) vs. Kings (36)
Playing there first game in this summer league and with only five players, the NY Rockits may have looked overmatched going up against the Kings who were riding high on there previous weeks victory. From the start, the Rockits let it be known that they were playing to win as Brian Wong connected on four 3-pointers in the first half to give the Rockits a cushion they would keep throughout the game. Brian finished with 14 points and was followed by D3 hoopster, Chris Chin who finished with 12 pts. The Kings were led by the scoring of Tony Lau who finished with 12 pts.

7:05pm NY Cruisers (29) vs.
Maximum Output (40)
Starting a game without your top three scorers is definitely a setback. But that didn't stop the Cruisers from playing some outstanding first half ball to lead by one 20-19. The second half was a different story as the Cruisers struggled to score even with the presence of Tony Hu, one of the top players on the east coast. With Maximum Output playing some outstanding defense, they limited the Cruisers to only 9 second half points while at the same time scoring from the inside and outside. Maximum Output was led by the play of their big man, Jason Yee who limited the Cruisers Tony Hu to four free throws while grabbing a game high 12 rebounds. They were paced in the scoring column by Jay Chung and Yuming Li who both finished with 13 pts.

NY Ducks (46) vs. NY Cruisers (44)
Two of the top teams in the New York area battled it out in the Gold division which saw the NY Ducks eke by the NY Cruisers by two points. Tied at the half 24-24, the second half saw both teams step up there defense. Turnovers killed the Cruisers as they committed a game high 14. But that didn't stop guard Chris Liu from carrying the scoring burden for the team by scoring 18 pts. The Ducks survived even after giving up four technical free throws to the Cruisers because some players weren't listed in the scorebook. A bright spot for the team was the play of guard Wilson Lew who finished with 19 pts to lead his team.

7:05pm NY Asian Knights (27) vs.
Kings (41)
The newly formed Kings (players from various local teams) played a helter skelter game on there way to a 14 point victory over the Asian Knights. The Kings by pushing the pace throughout the game forced numerous turnovers from there opponents which led to many easy baskets. The Kings were led by Joe Wu (15 pts) and Steven Lee (9 pts) before leaving the game with a slight knee sprain. Pacing the Asian Knights scoring attack was D3 hoopster, Zachary Liu who finished with 14 pts.

CHAMPIONSHIP GAME - KINGS (35) vs. NY YL Rockits (24)
written by Pierre Nguyen

With the older Rockits winning their division, the younger Rockits team would try to do the same and sweep this year's edition of the Summer Night League. In a rematch of one of the most exciting preliminary games of the summer - in which the older, more seasoned Sentinels sank a miracle three point bank shot that tied the game and sent the game into overtime where they prevailed. This championship game had greatness written all over it. But when the game began, the Sentinels flexed their muscle as Big Kahuna - Hiram Chan took over. They jumped out to an early lead that was never threatened. The game was never in doubt after the tip off. Ahead by as much 14 pts., the Sentinels held onto a 35-24 victory.

6:15pm Semifinal: Game 1 - Columbus Park (45) vs.
Young Life Rockits (46)
With both teams calling Columbus Park home, you knew this first semifinal was going to be a nailbiter. Both teams didn't disappoint as the Young Life Rockits pulled off an upset and advanced to the Championship Game next week. Right after the tip, the Young Life Rockits managed to jump out to an early lead thanks largely to the putrid shooting of Columbus Park. The YL Rockits managed to take a lead of 15 points early in the first half. Before long, everyone was thinking blowout. Sometimes, it takes this kind of situation to wake a team up. Columbus Park definitely woke up as they started to pressure the YL Rockits. With a couple of turnovers, Columbus Park was able to cut the lead to 11 at halftime. It was still early in the second half when the YL Rockits decided to kill some time by playing a four corners offense. This definitely backfired as Columbus Park started to play some serious defense. They forced nine turnovers and cut the lead down to three points. With less than two minutes remaining, Columbus Park actually took the lead. The lead changed hands on a couple of occasions before Ian Yu hit the decisive basket driving to the hole and was fouled on the play to give the YL Rockits a point lead and the game. Pacing the YL Rockits was Ian Yu with 15 pts and Joshua Pena with 13 pts. Leading the way for Columbus Park was Michael Louie and Nicolas Lam, both scored 10 pts each.

7:05pm Semifinal: Game 2 -
Sentinels(33) vs. Smoked U(32)
Going into this semifinal game, it looked as if the Sentinels played their game, they were a lock to get into the Championship game. Early in the game, the Sentinels jumped out to a 16-4 lead thanks to the play of Edmond Quon who hit a trey and a couple of field goals. Nothing was going in for Smoked U as they weren't able to connect from the outside or inside. At halftime, the Sentinels held onto a commanding 16 point lead. It looked bleak but Smoked U came out for the second half playing some serious defense and started whittling away at the lead. With 8 minutes left, the lead had been cut to seven points, thanks in part to the scoring of Victor Chan and Denny Lee. The momentum of the game seemed to be shifting to Smoked U. and with under one minute to go they were down by only two points and possession of the ball. Smoked U didn't rush and was able to find Denny who banged home a trey which gave Smoked U it's first lead of the game, 32-31. The Sentinels inbounded the ball and it fell into the hands of their point guard Edmond Quon who shook off his man on a drive to the hoop. With Denny helping on defense, he seemed to tie up Edmond and had his whole hand on the ball when the whistle blew. The referee had called a foul instead of a jump ball. Edmond stepped to the line and quietly canned two free throws to give the Sentinels a 33-32 lead. With 20 seconds remaining, Smoked U had possession and left the game into the hands of Fred Santos. Fred was able to shake off his man and drove past the free throw line heading to the hoop. Fred thought twice about shooting tried to pass to a teammate open on the outside only to have it stolen by the Sentinels. The Sentinels tried to advance the ball upcourt and it was stolen by Smoke U with two seconds left by Victor Chan. Vic launched a desperation shot to the goal but it sailed wide and the Sentinels escaped with a 1-point victory. Edmond Quan led the way for the Sentinels with 12 pts and Hiram Chan finished with 7 pts. For Smoked U, they were led by Victor Chan 12 pts. and Denny Lee, 9 pts.

What promised to be an exciting game between the two undefeated group leaders turned out to be a game full of mistakes, turnovers, and missed shots. Even with the home court advantage and the crowd on their side, the team called Columbus Park couldn't overtake the Sentinels and lost 29-26. Even though both teams playing some sorry for the excuse b-ball, they both had their chances to steal the game just by making a couple of shots. The Sentinels did just that and was paced by the outstanding play of Hiram Chan (10pts and five blocks). For Columbus Park, Nicolas Lam tallied 9 pts.

Smoked U led throughout the game holding a 25-16 halftime before winning 43-32. Smoked U was led by Victor Chan, 19 pts and Fred Santos, 12 pts. The Cougars were paced by Tim Li with 10 pts.

7:05pm NY-YL Rockits (25) vs.
Sentinels (27) 2OT
Playing on their home court at Columbus Park, the Young Life Rockits might've taken the Sentinels a little lightly as the game went into double overtime. Both teams played sloppily throughout the game as evidenced by the final score. Trailing by three and with the ball, the Sentinels had only one hope as they inbounded the ball. Sink a trey and send it into overtime. They did exactly that as Jimmy Lam tossed it in from beyond the arc and sunk the game into overtime. With both teams shooting bricks in the first overtime, the crowd was getting impatient. Both teams exchanged baskets before the Sentinels pulled up by a basket. The Rockits had a chance for the win or tie, but a bad pass to Joshua Pena forced him to take an off balanced trey.

NEW YORK DUCKS
2003 SUMMER NIGHTS LEAGUE CHAMPIONS

written by Nelson Yu

The championship game of the 3rd Annual Summer Nights League was exciting as it can get as the New York Ducks put on a second half clinic on defense and defeated the defending champions, New York Rockits by a score of 66-50. For a complete wrap up on all the games of the 3rd Annual Summer Nights League, look below.

On July 8th, the 3rd Annual ASIANHOOPS.COM Summer Nights League tipped off a three week period with action from the exciting preliminary games. With each preliminary game determining a teams seeding in the playoff round, you can bet there was some serious hoops. As expected the defending champions, NY Rockits AIA came into these preliminary games physically strong led by big men Ed Chan, Joe Liu and Kevin Chin and some precision shooting by their back court trio of Kwok Fung, Dave Scott and Brian Wong. They were able to power drive their way into first place of their "A" bracket by beating each team by double figures. Finishing in second for the "A" bracket was the New York Free Agents. With their scrappy and all out hustle play on the defensive end, they were able to beat out the wiser and tougher New York Fishmen in a very close battle 48-42 to claim the second seed with third seed going to the New York Fishmen. Claiming the fourth seed were the young, but up and coming New York Junior Rockits who finished 0-3.

As we move along to the "B" bracket, we found there was a three way tie for first place between last year's semi-finalists the Ducks, the 2003 Junior National champions Young Life Rockits and Kev's Posse, all finished at 2 and 1. The team coming in Fourth was another young team coming into this tournament, the AAYC Wildcats who finished 0-3. After the seeding by point differential we found the Ducks in first place led by the play of Wilson Lew. As the first seed in the "B" bracket, they faced the younger and smaller Young Life Rockits and defeated them by a score of 33 to 27. Coming in second were the feisty and tough, defensive minded Young Life Rockits who gave Kev's Posse a run for their money in the prelims. It was a close one but the Young Life Rockits came out with a victory and Kev's Posse with a loss 40-32. For Kev's Posse to secure the third seed, they had to beat the Ducks which we knew was going to be no easy task. It was a tough one, indeed, but the wiser and experienced Kev's Posse team took the game. Led by local playground legend Jimly Chong, who decided to take over with several minutes remaining in the game, they won a close one, 34-30.

PLAYOFFS

Playoff time has finally begun for the Summer Nights League. All teams this year have a chance to compete in the playoffs and compete for the title. In the playoffs, brackets will cross over so teams will have a chance to see some new faces. The playoff race to the championship is set as the first seed meets the fourth seed. The NY Rockits faced up against the baby faced AAYC Wildcats and the first place Ducks against the Junior Rockits. In front of a capacity crowd at Roosevelt Park the NY Rockits had a clinic with the much younger AAYC Wildcats. The NY Rockits AIA ran the Wild Cats out of the playoff race 62-11 led by the 30+ point performance by Brian Wong. After the Junior Rockits were audience to the first game they told themselves that this was not going to happen to them. So the second game of the night deemed to be more interesting as the Junior Rockits got ready to battle with the NY Ducks. It was a battle indeed, as the Junior Rockits put the Ducks on their heels as they played some hard nosed defense. To everyone's surprise the Junior Rockits actually took charge of the game in the first half by securing the lead. But things changed when the second half went underway. The Ducks realized they were the much more experienced team. They finally woke up and taught the younger Rockits a lesson not to forget by coming out on top 45-27.
The next set of playoff games featured the older and wiser New York Fishmen and the young and hungry Young Life Rockits followed by the New York Free Agents versus Kev's Posse. The first game of the night was a tight battle as the short handed younger Rockit team were missing two key players for the night.. The Young Life Rockits were still able to maintain a lead on the Fishmen most of the game led by Junior Nationals MVP Kenny Yu (14 points) and the precise free throw shooting of Ming Wang (10 points). The Fishmen played catch up most of the night. But late in the second half Ramon Wong took over by knocking down three key treys. The last one Ramon Wong hit gave the Fishmen their first lead of the night. From there on the lead went back and fourth till the very end. The last minute proved to be the ultimate test as both teams looked nervous. Kenny Yu hit a short jumper to take the lead briefly at 34-32 but later the Fishmen forced a turnover and tied the game up at 34-34. Coming back on the other end, Rockit Chris Chin drew a 2 shot foul. After missing his first shot he calmly sank the second, taking a one point lead. With seconds dwindling, the Fishmen called time out and came up with a play to no prevail as they turned the ball over for the Young Life Rockits to advance to the semifinals. The last game of the night was no different. A short-handed Kev's Posse (missing Jim Li and sharp shooter Danny Chong) came out sharp and gained control of the game quickly. Maintaining the lead the whole night the Posse got a little careless late in the game and let the Free Agents back into the game. Playing catch up all night long the Free Agents refused to give up. Using their scrappy full court press to force some turnovers late in the game the Posse saw an 8 point lead evaporate like water in the sun. Time was still running out for the Agents forcing them to foul. The Free Agents got within one point (30-29). But with several quick pump fakes the whole gym heard the whistle from the referee and a loud "YEAAA BABY!" come from Denny Lee for being awarded two foul shots by drawing the foul to help secure a semifinals appearance for Kev's Posse by beating the tough Free Agents 32-29.

CHAMPIONSHIP GAME - NY ROCKITS AIA 57 vs. NY CRUISERS 46
Written by Nelson Yu
We finally made it! Yes folks. The final is finally underway. In this Championship round, two of the best local teams faced off against one another. It is the New York Rockits vs. the New York Cruisers. In this game, both these teams were able to showcase their unique team styles of play as well as each team members' individual raw talent for all to see. This game promises to be an exciting one and an exciting one it was indeed!

The Rockits made several key changes in their offense and their defense to adjust to the style of play the Cruisers. Such maneuvers proved useful down the stretch of the game. The Rockits jumped out to a very early 10-point lead in the first half as Brian Wong and David Scott buried trey after trey from beyond the arc. But that lead would soon be forgotten as the Cruisers came roaring back. The Cruisers gained a brief lead with some strong inside play from their big man, George Chan #50, and some precision free throw shooting by guard C.B. Liu, (combined 13 points). But at the end of the first half, the Rockits would still be up by two (23-21).

As the second half got underway, the defense of both teams tightened drastically. All the high scorers of the first half for both teams were shut down offensively. This was an excellent display of both teams' defensive prowess throughout the tournament. The Cruisers are well known for their superb and dominating low post play and they didn't disappoint as they kept pounding it into their other big man, Tony Hu (13 points). But the Cruisers are not the only team with dominating inside play. The Rockits eventually utilized their size as they pounded it down low to their big men, Ed Chan (18 points) and Kevin Chin (12 points). The turning point of the game came with just under three minutes to play when Victor Tang threw several eye- popping assists to Ed Chan as he muscled in for 5 consecutive lay-ups. The Cruisers couldn't answer the final surge of the Rockits as the buzzer sounded. Congratulations to both teams for a job well done!

I especially thank all those who have helped out during this Summer Nights League tournament. I hope everybody enjoyed this event, the teams involved as well as those who watched these games. The first game of the night was played by the Rockits and the Sea Slugs. This game was no contest to the Rockits, who steadily built up a lead as high as 30 points and never looked back. The Sea Slugs had a very balanced attack from their squad. But was not enough to overcome the 3 point shooting of their opponents. The Rockits' duo of guards (Kwok and Brian) shot eight treys from behind the arc to aid in their stunning 62-45 victory over the Sea Slugs.

As for the second game of the night, the BearCats overcame a late and strong charge by the SkyHawks and defeated them by a margin of 62- 44. The BearCats started off the game strong with their tough defense and fast break chances. But the SkyHawks woke up late in the first half and made a huge come back with their own tough defense and a very balanced attack by all memebers of the team, bringing the game to within a couple of points. In one of the best-fought games of this season, the Rockits Y&O outwitted the Bearcats by one point. The Bearcats with their experience and size dominated a much smaller Rockits team in the first half led by the tremendous inside play of Jason Joa. The Bearcats held their lead throughout the first half. But in the second half, the feisty Rockits woke up. The utilized their speed and pestering defensive play to spark their fast break offense. Led by the scoring of Richard (Helmet) San Pedro (18 points) and the balanced scoring of the rest of the team, the Rockits came out on top with a very tight, one point victory.

In one of the most anticipated games in this Summer Nights League, the NY Rockits AIA and the Cruisers were matched up against one another. Once again the Cruisers used their size to dominate most of the game as they had in the past. The Cruisers were led by the strong low post play of Tony Hu(#2) of the Cruisers who tallied 18 points. The NY Cruisers dominant inside presence allowed them to hold a commanding lead throughout the game. But late in the second half, the Rockits woke up. They were led by Kevin Chin (14 points) and some crucial treys by their guards, Brian Wong and Kwok Fung.

Tonight's game was crucial for both teams. Entering this game, the Ducks and the Rockits both held undefeated records of 2-0. But only one would come out on top and hold soul possession of first place in their division. From the start, you could tell that this younger Rockits team was undersized and that difference finally caught up to them. The continuing dominant play of Damian (Kirby) Shaw proved no match for the smaller Rockits team as he pounded his way to double digits. The Rockits fought a hard battle but to no prevail, falling to the final score of 68-48.

Tonight's game was a duel between to very different teams. The Cruisers, a team that exhibits an excellent half-court offense against Da Bien, a squad that likes to run the fast break. Throughout this game, the Cruisers displayed a very organized and patient offense by utilizing their size inside. To counter, Da Bien used their speed, led by Shawn Reyes with 20 out of the team's 27 points. But the Cruisers showed that there is no "I" in TEAM. They were able to stop the running game of their opponents and force them into playing their patient half-court set. In the end the Cruisers fought off Da Bien by the final score of 36-27. Thanks to some key free throws by C.B. Liu who hit 6 for 6 from the line (12 points total).

In their first round playoff game, the Cruisers beat the Skyhawks by a score of 65-40. The Cruisers were led by the guard play of C.B. Liu (18 points) and Warren C. (16 points). The Skyhawks countered with some excellent three-point shooting by connecting on 6 treys throughout the game. But in the end, the Cruisers proved that size matters most as they out rebounded the Skyhawks on the offensive and defensive ends of the court. The result was the Cruisers cruising past the first round by 25 points.

6:15pm 2nd A (NY ROCKITS AIA)
53 vs. 3rd B (BEARCATS) 46

More playoff action was underway as the NY Rockits AIA squared off against the Bearcats. In one of the more competitive playoff games seen thus far, the Rockits managed to pull away in the end and advance into the semifinals. The Rockits started the game as sharp as can be. They were sparked by the shooting touches of Dave Scott and Victor Tang, combining for 15 points in the first half. But the Bearcats came into tonight's game ready for action as they gave the Rockits a run for their money. They fought hard and saw the lead go back and forth several times in the first half. Leading the charge for the Bearcats was Yuming Li (14 points). But in the second half, things changed. The Rockits tightened up their defense and hit some big shots down the stretch to pull off a victory.

44 vs. 2nd B (YL ROCKITS) 39

YES! Playoff action gets even more exciting as we entered the second game of the night. This game displayed two very talented, young fast-breaking teams. Due to prior committments, the YL Rockits missed some key players yet still managed to play tough and give Da Bien a hard fought game. Tonight's battle was one of the closet games played thus far in the tournament. At the start of the game, the feisty Rockit guards took the rock hard to the hole. Guards Chris "Doony" Chin and Jarvis "Nose" Miu (combined 28 points) forced Da Bien into early foul trouble. This aided the YL Rockits tremendously as they built a lead that they maintained throughout most of the first half. But the second half was a different story as fatigue set in for the short handed Rockits team. The game grew closer and closer as the Reyes brothers went on a scoring spree (32 points). Da Bien eventually took a 3-4 point lead and was able to hold off some late charges by the Rockits to advance into the semifinals.

6:45pm Semifinals - NY ROCKITS AIA
58 vs. DUCKS 51
Written by Nelson Yu
The very first semi final of the night was underway as the Rockits were set to face off against the Ducks. The tip off was thrown. The whistle blew. The ball went into play. From there, the Rockits took charge and never looked back. They jumped out to a very earlier double-digit lead as all the Rockits managed to contribute to the scoring. With such a balanced attack and some stifling man to man defense, they were able to hold the Ducks at bay. The Ducks managed to make some noise late in the second half led by Frankie Li and Damian Kirby Shaw with a combined 34 points. Unfortunately, time ran out, as the Rockits were able to advance into the finals by a score of 58-51.

7:45pm Semifinals - NY CRUISERS
44vs. DA BIEN 41

This particular semi final was nothing close to boring. It was Da Bien vs. N.Y. Cruisers. When these two teams first faced off in the regular season, the Cruisers came out on top. This time around it seemed like a different story. Da Bien was ready to redeem themselves as the jump ball started the game and this time the tempo was in their hands. Again, Shawn Reyes displayed some of his raw talent once again by leading the way with 20 points. But raw talent was not enough as the Cruisers battled back and took the lead, led by the inside dominance of Tony Hu and George Chan (26 points). This was another "hold your breath" type of game as the defense of Da Bien forced consecutive offensive charging fouls to keep the game close. Time was never on Da Bien's side as it ticked away forcing them to foul with several seconds left and only down one point. The final foul put Cruiser guard C.B. Liu on the line and he calmly drained a pair of free throws. This sealed the game for the Cruisers as they advance with a 44-41 victory.
