Coach Virg Borbo and his Rockits U. team Expectations were high for the championship game of the 8th Annual Summer Nights Basketball League scheduled for Tuesday, August 26th between the Rockits U. and the Asphalt Ninjas. It was a night that Coach Virg Borbo and his Rockits U. team would remember forever as they coasted to a 54-27 victory. As soon as the tip off was tossed, it was evident that the Rockits U. team was on a mission and eager to capture the "CHIP". Playing on their home court, Columbus Park, with a roster of 10 and missing only starting forward Dave Liu, this team was ready to rock. Their opponent, the Asphalt Ninjas, suited six players but were missing three starters, guards Nick Mui, Justin Kao and forward Chi Ming Pun. It was all down hill from there as there top three scorers all had to return to college for the fall 2008 semester. Without these three the game wasn't much of a game at all. The Rockits U. team hounded and pressed the Asphalt Ninjas into countless turnovers and converted them into easy layups. The tournament's outstanding player, Ian Yu, led the way with 11 pts. Stephen "Chalupa" Gong chipped in with 10 pts. with the rest of the team members all scoring to lead the balanced attack. For the Ninjas, they were led by newcomer Timmy Chin with 11 pts while Wilson Lew notched 8 pts. With the 8th Annual Summer Nights League concluding another exciting summer hoops season, we look forward to seeing you all back in 2009. Thanks for playing. Thursday August

2007 2nd Place - Rockits U. RESULTS What looked like it would be an easy victory just wasn't. Rockits U. coach Virg Borbo's game plan was to harass and tire out Chris Chin as he was the catalyst to the team. It worked perfectly as Chris was always tightly guarded by the likes of Patrick Lee, Ian Yu and others. The results showed Chris with 4 point and fouling out in regulation. Back to the game, both teams played tenacious defense early on. The Demonz in their 2-3 zone and the Rockits U. team in their stifling man to man. The Demonz jumped out to an early 4 point lead only to have the Rockits come back and take a 17-15 halftime lead. In the second half, the lead changed hands numerous times, with Kevin Chin leading the way for the Demonz and Tim Chin for the Rockits. Both players hit the clutch baskets when the team needed a bucket. But it was the defense again that made the second half a nailbiter. With less than 2 minutes remaining and trailing by two, Denny Lee of the Demonz took his man to the goal and scored to tie the game. The ensuing foul shot was missed and resulted in the Rockits holding the ball for the last shot at the basket. After a time out to set up the play, Ian took the ball to the middle and passed outside for an jumper that wasn't taken immediately and regulation time just about to end. The first ot saw the Rockits win the tip and control of the ball. But Denny was called for an offensive foul (hooking) as he made his move to the basket. It was just another one of the questionable offensive foul calls (7 in total) made throughout the game by the referee team. Once again, Rockits U. had the ball and waited for the last shot. But to no avail, they lost the ball in the final seconds and another ot was looming. The second ot mirrored the first as the Rockits again won the tip and brought the ball down only to miss a shot and the Rockits securing the rebound and yet another chance for the final shot. Once again, Ian Yu took control for the Rockits and milked the clock until 10 seconds remained before he made his move to the basket. Once again, the Rockits came up empty with time running out. In the third ot, Ian anticipated the back tip from the Demonz and stole the ball and scored a layup to give the Rockits a 2-point lead. Kev Chin came right back and hit a shot and we were tied again. With the Rockits inbouding the ball, Kev Chin of the Demonz intercepted the pass. As the Demonz were swinging the ball around, the ball was almost stolen until it wound up back in the hands of Kevin Chin who drove from the right wing to the middle of the 3 second lane and pulled up to hit the soft jumper and a 2-point lead for the Demonz. With less than 20 seconds remaining, the Rockits pushed the ball up quickly only to lose possession on an errant pass. After fouling quickly, the Demonz hit two free throws to seal the victory, 33-29. Kevin Chin led the way for the Demonz with 11pts and Tim Chin led the Rockits with 9 pts. GAME SCHEDULE - Results written by Patrick Lee Tuesday, August 22,
2006 @ 6:45pm
Championship game night is truly special as both teams, Rockits U and RDH were clearly a notch above the rest of this year's select field. Another similarity was that both teams relied heavily on their superb guard play. RDH with Heng Chen and Peter Mei and the Rockits U. with Ian Yu, Patrick Lee and Joshua Pena. championship game action - no layup rule in effect After the tip-off, the Rockits U. team jumped out to an early 8 point lead thanks to a couple of easy baskets by Ian Yu (10 pts - MVP) and a trey by Joshua Pena (12 pts). But true to form, RDH came storming back to cut the deficit to two by halftime led by Will Pun and Heng Chen. With a championship on the line, the second half saw both teams step it up on the defensive end forcing numerous turnovers and missed shots. But the momentum of the game swung in favor of the Rockits as Patrick Lee (tournament coordinator) made two clutch defensive plays, first by taking a charge and then stealing the rock. Sandwich in a trey by Pat and the Rockits U. team was on its way to it's first summer nights league championship. Final score: ROCKITS U. 35, RDH 30. LEAGUE MVP: IAN YU,
Rockits U. Congratulations to the Coach Virgilio Borbo and the NY Rockits organization on their 5th Summer Nights League title (2001,2002,2004,2005,2006).
SCHEDULE: July 18 - August 22, 2006 - COLUMBUS PARK Tuesday, July 18, 2006
(scorekeeping: Rockits U.) On a scorching summer night, Columbus
Park and RDH looked to begin the Summer Nights League on the
right foot. This was a game of runs, as both teams exchanged
leads several teams throughout the game. RDH started the game
energized and had a couple of easy lay-ups for the early lead.
However, with a couple of steals and lay-ups of their own, Columbus
Park quickly tied up the game and took a 3 point lead at the
half. The second half proved to be an interesting one as the
lead for neither team exceeded 5 points. RDH's good shooting
and rebounding continued to keep them in the game, as Columbus
Park countered with easy baskets in the paint. The game came
down to the wire with Columbus Park up by one. But a poised RDH
team swung the ball patiently until hitting the open man for
a 20 footer, and putting them up by two. On the very next play,
Columbus Park had a chance to tie the game with two free throws.
But only managing to hit 1 out of 2 at the line, RDH was able
to secure their season opener with the final score 32-29. Thursday, July 20,
2006 (scorekeeping: YL Rockits/Rockits
MM.) The contest was between two teams who knew how each other played. The Rockits intended to stick to their game plan, give the ball to big man Howie Chu down low. On the other side, the Case Cougars wanted to play an uptempo game and look for easy fast break points. As the game began, it was clear that the Cougars were not going to back down despite being the underdog. The Cougars were able force some early turnovers to take the lead. However, after taking a timeout, the Rockits regrouped and settled down. They were able to control the boards and force some turnovers of their own, as the Rockits regained the lead with the score of 27-15 at the half. Tim Li of the Cougars kept them in it by scoring 10 points, 14 in the game. However, the spotlight was on Howie Chu as he got secured rebounds on both sides of the court with no answer from the smaller Cougars. Howie Chu finished the game with 17 points to lead the Rockits to a 53-35 victory.
We have seen these games many times, a team consisting of young players (17 and under) against players who are older but have much more experience and basketball IQ. The young Rockits team looked to use their speed to their advantage as they played a full court man to man defense and to push the ball. On the other hand, team Comeback looked to slow down the pace and play a half court game. However, both teams struggled to score as we had a low scoring first half from both sides. Despite the slow first half the second half quickly escalated to an interesting game with a dramatic finish. Team Comeback capitalized on forced turnovers and second chance points as the Rockits continued to play an uptempo game to keep them in the game. The game would come down to the last minute of the game. With the scored tied at 31, the Rockits trying to hold for the last shot carelessly turns the ball over, and results in a 2-point lead for team Comeback. On the ensuing play, Peter from the Rockits makes a strong move to the basket and draws a hard foul-later deemed a flagrant foul! Peter calmly sinks the two free-throws and the Rockits maintain the possession. However, the Rockits could not use the extra possession to their advantage as the game goes to Overtime. With less than 20 seconds left of the first overtime, the Rockits are up 1. However, Tony Wong from team Comeback is fouled and awarded two free-throws. With the pressure on, he was only able to hit 1 of 2. The game would be sent to a second overtime. We skip ahead to the last 10 seconds, the Rockits are down by 3 and have possession of the ball. After passing the ball around the perimeter, team Comeback carelessly fouls the jump-shooter while attempting a 3-point shot. The shooter is award 3 free-throws and a chance to tie the game. With fatigue setting in and pressure forever rising, he only hits 2 out of 3. The Rockits foul, but would lose a tough one 43-30. Jeff Chin led team Comeback with 14 points; Peter led the Rockits with 11 points, followed by George with 10. Tuesday, July 25, 2006
(scorekeeping: Rockits U ./Rockits
MM) A contest between two fellow Rockit teams,
this game became lopsided quickly. With Tommy Zheng leading the
fast breaks and Howie Chu securing the paint, Rockits M&M
quickly took the lead. Bart, coming off the bench, scored 7 quick
points helping the Rockits M&M to a 23-10 halftime lead.
In the second half, we would continue to see the Rockits M&M
show the younger Rockits who's boss as they picked apart a zone
defense from the YL Rockits. The final score was 44-27. Howie
Chu scored 9 points in the second half, leading the team with
13 points, followed by Victor Ng with 8. On the other side, George
Tang led his team with 8 points. The bigger and more experienced team Comeback
looked to go 2-0 against the Case Cougars-who are seeking for
their first win. Team Comeback's size definitely helped them
start the game right. The Case Cougars could not find a way to
get an easy basket as they were forced to shoot jump shots. Team
Comeback were able to keep the Cougars to only 8 points in the
first half as they led 17-8. The Cougars would come out of the
half with a full court man to man, but team Comeback was able
to pass their way out of the press. Team Comeback would eventually
win the game 38-19. Thursday, July 27,
2006 (scorekeeping: YL Rockits) On a hot and humid day, we have the Rockits U. team playing their first game against RDH who is looking to go 2-0. As both teams struggled to find their rhythm, RDH's front line looked to pound it into the undersized Rockits U team, with two quick and1 and 1's to begin the game. However, the Rockits utilized their speed and agility, and were able to get themselves back into the game by hitting 5 three-pointers in the first half to take a marginal 7 point lead at the half. In the second half, the Rockits came out on point as they were able to push the lead to 15. Despite a 15 point deficit and what may turn out to be a blowout, RDH never quit. Big men, Steve and Ken, from RDH continued to control the boards and got many second chance points. With Jack Ma of RDH taking over the offense-9 points in the second half- and capitalizing on careless turnovers by the Rockits, RDH was able to bring the lead down to 4 points with 2 minutes to go. However, this would be as close as RDH would get as the Rockits hit crucial free-throws at the end to seal the game. Ian Yu, Josh Pena, and Patrick Lee combined for 47 points for the Rockits, with Ian Yu leading the way with 18 points. Jack Ma led RDH with 12 points. The highest scoring game so far this summer with a final score of 57- 48. Tuesday, August 1,
2006 (scorekeeping: Rockits U,/YL
Rockits) Without leading scorers Peter and George
for the Rockits, who would pick up the slack? As the game started
the Cougars definitely looked like the sharper team. Creating
numerous turnovers and finishing fast breaks, the Cougars made
the game look easy. However, the Rockits finally resolved their
issues and were able to make a run of their own to tie up the
game. The Cougars would finish the half on a 5-0 run to take
a 20-17 lead. The second half became a contest between Tim Li
of the Cougars and Kerry of the Rockits. The two would exchange
baskets on both sides of the court. Kerry was able to secure
numerous offensive rebounds and scored easily for a total of
9 second half points ( 14 in all,) while Tim slashed and shot
his way to 9 points (16 total.) Despite Tim and the rest of the
Cougar's persistence, they would lose by 1 point in overtime-
the final score 42-41. Next we have two teams trying to maintain
their perfect record and to be the first place seed in their
bracket. The Rockits were the more energetic team in the beginning
of the game as they opened up with an 8-0 lead. But living up
to their team name, slowly but surely the more experienced players
of team Comeback would quickly catch up and make it a game. With
the weather still over 90 degrees at 7 o'clock, it was no wonder
both teams struggled to score. It was a tight game down to the
wire. With a 5 point lead, team Comeback was hoping the clock
would speed up. But with a steal, lay-up and then a 3-pointer,
the Rockits tied the game again. Team Comeback would eventually
take a 1 point lead with 10 seconds left. With 10 seconds left
in the game, Rockits looked to go down low to Howie Chu. And
in desperate need of a basket, the big man goes up, takes the
foul and powers in the game winning basket! The Rockits would
take a thriller 35-33 and the sole possession of 1st place seeding
in bracket B. Thursday, August 3,
2006 (scorekeeping: Rockits MM) Despite the 100 degree weather, the bench at Columbus Park was filled with spectators to watch a highly anticipated game between the Rockits U and Columbus Park. This would be a rematch of last year's thrilling semi-finals game, where the Rockits narrowly escaped with a victory. Once the tip was up, everyone could tell Columbus Park was serious. Playing a Box-1 defense on Joshua Pena, they were determined to make someone else beat them. Columbus Park quickly built a 10-0 lead. The Rockits, realizing the game was slipping away from them, finally played with some energy to make it an interesting game again. At the half, Columbus Park was holding a 1-point lead-19-18. The second half started out differently as the Rockits offense started to pick up, led by Ian Yu's 12 points(19 total) and Josh Pena's 9 points(13 total.) On the other side, Shing and Dave from Columbus Park would not let the game slip away contributing 11 points each. But ultimately it would take a clutch 3-point shot with time expiring by Michael "Mongol" Louie to send the game to overtime. In overtime, easy baskets by Dave and Shing kept Columbus in the game. But with a 3 point deficit, Columbus missed a 3 pointer at the buzzer to give the Rockit's a 3 point victory in another exciting summer nights game. Tuesday, August 8,
2006 (Interdivision) In the first of two interdivision games,
we have Columbus Park vs. the Case Cougars. The Cougars playing
without regular starters Way and Tim, someone else would have
to step up in order for the Cougars to have a winning chance.
From the start of the game, Columbus' offense controlled the
game. Shing of Columbus Park had his way with the Cougars offensively,
grabbing offensive rebound after offensive rebound and scoring
on easy lay-ins. His hustle earned him 14 first half points.
However, careless turnovers and a lackadaisical defense prevented
the early blowout as Columbus had a 10 point lead at the half.
David Kong of the Cougars was scoring inside and out trying to
keep his team in it with 12 first half points. More careless
turnovers plagued Columbus in the beginning of the second half.
With the Cougars capitalizing on these turnovers, they would
cut the lead down to five. However, that would be as close as
the Cougars would get. Michael Louie started getting serious.
Along with a couple of steals, he exploded for 13 quick points,
highlighted by his fast break. He would finish the game with
23 points, followed by Shing with 18. David Kong of the Cougars
led his team with 14 points. RDH vs. Young Life Rockits. This game
would turn ugly quick. The undersized Rockits team struggled
to score against the bigger RDH team. However, it was the turnovers
that allowed RDH to pull away quickly. Going on a 17-3 run to
begin the game, RDH would hold a 21-6 lead at the half. The second
half proved to be much the same as the first. Good shooting from
Victor Yip of RDH expanded the lead to over 20. RDH would cruise
to a 49-18 victory. PLAYOFFS After a commanding victory against the
YL Rockits, RDH tried to use their momentum against the Case
Cougars to advance into the semis. However because RDH wasn't
really taking the game very seriously, the Cougars were able
to keep themselves in the game with a balanced scoring attack.
The Cougars were only down 5 points at the half. Despite this
2 possession deficit, the Cougars were not able to get it together
the second half, offensively or defensively. RDH was playing
with more intensity as they started to pull away early in the
second half. RDH's defense limited the Cougars to only two second
half points. Led by the scoring of Will and Victor of RDH, they
will advance to the semis facing the undefeated Rockits M&M. In the other quarter final game, it was Columbus Park and team Comeback. After team Comeback scored a couple of early baskets, Columbus Park quickly changed their defense to a man-to-man defense. This proved to be an effective move as team Comeback had its difficulties scoring. But Columbus Park would have its own shooting difficulties. Offensively, Columbus Park just could not get it going. Despite Columbusâ horrific shooting, they were only down 6 points at the half, 12-6. In the second half, team Comeback would get some baskets from Tat to give them some more breathing room. Realizing it was now or never, Columbus Park started playing with a sense of motivation as they started full court pressing team Comeback. They were able to cut down the lead down to 10 points with 6 minutes to go. But good foul shooting from Tony Wong would seal the deal - 9/10 from the free-throw line for the game. Team Comeback would win the game 33-18 as they play the Rockits U in the semis.
Tuesday, August 15,
2006 - Semifinals Both teams tried to advance to the finals
as this semi-finals game went underway. Determined to make someone
else beat them-for the second straight week-a team would go box-and-one
against Joshua Pena and the Rockits. However, this week the Rockits
were playing more effectively against this defense as they found
the open players on the perimeter. The Rockits would go on a
11-0 run to start the game, limited by their own turnovers The
Rockits would hold a 10 point lead throughout most of the game
until ten minutes left of the second half. Then one basket at
a time, team Comeback would slowly get back into the game. With
about 3 minutes left, Comeback trimmed the lead down to 2 points.
But two big offensive rebounds by Stephen Gong and Patrick Lee
led to a 6 point lead and would force team Comeback to foul.
Free-throws made would seal the game as the Rockits move on to
win 36-29. Thursday, August 17,
2006 - Semifinals The undefeated Rockits M&M were the favorites in this game looking to head into the finals. At the start of the game it would sure look this way with the Rockits striking first and their defense stifling RDH's offense. But soon enough, RDH made its own adjustments to the Rockits 3-2 defense as they sent cutters from the weak side to expose the middle. The Rockits took a marginal lead of 2 points at the half, led by Victor Ng with 8 points. Will of RDH paced them with 7 points. Both teams were trading baskets during the second half. Two 3 pointers by the Rockits would be matched thanks to Jack Ma's good shooting. The difference in the game was RDH's hustle getting numerous offensive rebounds for second chance points. Missing several 3 pointers in the final minute, the Rockits would be forced to foul. But Peter Mei calmly hit the freethrows to help the RDH escape with a 3 point victory. Will of RDH had 11 points to lead his team. Victor Ng and Tommy Zheng both had 11 points to lead their team in scoring.

Division 2005 GOLD DIVISION CHAMPIONS - NY ROCKITS AIA Chinatown's best ballers were on display as the 2004 defending champions, NY Rockits were matched up once again with the Homecrest Cruisers in the Championship game of the 2004 Summer Nights League. Expectations were high as both teams usually play above the rim (ha ha) as these teams play against each other numerous times during the year. The Rockits came out shootin as they hit their first four shots to take a 8-0 lead before George Chan would answer for the Cruisers. But it was the Rockits who used their speed on the defensive end to nullify their height disadvantage that provided the spark. With the guards helping out down low against the Cruisers Twin Towers of George and Tony, the Rockits were able to force bad passes and convert steals into points. For the Rockits in the first half, Chris Chin led the way 12 pts which included an electrifying spin on a drive to the basket that left the fans screaming OOH's and AAH's. Rich San Pedro chipped in 6 pts to lead the Rockits to a 29-20 lead. Everyone knew the Cruisers weren't going to stand for this as they were outplayed in the first half. But in the second half, the Chris Chin highlight reel was in full swing as he hit two treys to extend the lead to 15 pts. From there, the Rockits carefully spread their offense around and quietly attacked the basket looking for easy buckets or fouls. Chris Chin finished with 26 pts and was selected the M.O.P. (most outstanding player) of the game. Kevin Chin chipped in with 10 pts (6-6 free throws), Ming Wang 8 pts, and Big Ed Chan tallied 5 pts and numerous hustle plays. For the Cruisers, George Chan netted 15 pts before fouling out and Tony Hu had 11 pts. Congratulations to the NY Rockits on their 4th Summer Nights League title (2001,2002,2004,2005). ALL TOURNAMENT TEAM MEN'S SILVER DIVISION 2005 SILVER DIVISION CHAMPIONS - COLUMBUS PARK Unlike the Tuesday night championship game, this one would go down to the wire. The young upstart, C.A.S.E. Cougars were looking to make it two in a row after the exciting semifinal the previous night. Columbus Park jumped ahead early and led 12-4. As soon as the game looked like a blowout, the Cougars would come clawing it's way back. By halftime, Columbus Park was only nursing a 24-18 lead. Within 2 minutes after the second half started, the Cougars quickly tied the game. Billy Wu hit a couple of shots and finished with 15 pts. The remainder of the second half, was a see saw affair as both teams had the lead only to let the other team catch up. Leadin the way for the Columbus Park team was "Mongol" who finished with 9 pts (three treys) and Eliot Wong also tallied 9 pts. For the Cougars, big man Howie Chu contributed 14 pts. RESULTS (winning teams in red) Tuesday,
August 24th, 2004 at Columbus Park On one side we had the unknown Kings trying to make a name for themselves coming off their upset win over the Ducks. On the other side we had the heavily favored New York Rockits. Would the Kings be able to pull off another upset? Playing with a five to seven man roster all summer the Rockits were able to go undefeated. Now here we were at the championship game and there were nine players on the sideline. Would this change the game plan? Would some players be upset at decreased playing time? NO! In what was the Rockits
most complete game of the summer, they dominated the Kings. The
Rockits suffocating defense led by Big Ed Chan held the Kings
to 9 first half points. And on the other side, there was no answer
for the balanced attack of the Rockits led by Brian Wong who
was on target from beyond the arc with 12 pts. In addition, Kevin
Chin dominated the paint with 9 pts., followed by tournament
MVP Rich San Pedro also adding 9 pts. For the Kings, Will Cheung
and Leighton Kuet tried their best to keep their team in the
game but their efforts proved fruitless. Congratulations to the
New York Rockits on their 43-20 victory. Tuesday,

RESULTS (winning teams in red) Thursday,
August 26th, 2004 at Columbus Park With the older Rockits winning their division, the younger Rockits team would try to do the same and sweep this year's edition of the Summer Night League. In a rematch of one of the most exciting preliminary games of the summer - in which the older, more seasoned Sentinels sank a miracle three point bank shot that tied the game and sent the game into overtime where they prevailed. This championship game had greatness written all over it. But when the game began, the Sentinels flexed their muscle as Big Kahuna - Hiram Chan took over. They jumped out to an early lead that was never threatened. The game was never in doubt after the tip off. Ahead by as much 14 pts., the Sentinels held onto a 35-24 victory. Thursday,

The championship game of the 3rd Annual Summer Nights League was exciting as it can get as the New York Ducks put on a second half clinic on defense and defeated the defending champions, New York Rockits by a score of 66-50. For a complete wrap up on all the games of the 3rd Annual Summer Nights League, look below.
On July 8th, the 3rd Annual ASIANHOOPS.COM Summer Nights League tipped off a three week period with action from the exciting preliminary games. With each preliminary game determining a teams seeding in the playoff round, you can bet there was some serious hoops. As expected the defending champions, NY Rockits AIA came into these preliminary games physically strong led by big men Ed Chan, Joe Liu and Kevin Chin and some precision shooting by their back court trio of Kwok Fung, Dave Scott and Brian Wong. They were able to power drive their way into first place of their "A" bracket by beating each team by double figures. Finishing in second for the "A" bracket was the New York Free Agents. With their scrappy and all out hustle play on the defensive end, they were able to beat out the wiser and tougher New York Fishmen in a very close battle 48-42 to claim the second seed with third seed going to the New York Fishmen. Claiming the fourth seed were the young, but up and coming New York Junior Rockits who finished 0-3.
As we move along to the "B" bracket, we found there was a three way tie for first place between last year's semi-finalists the Ducks, the 2003 Junior National champions Young Life Rockits and Kev's Posse, all finished at 2 and 1. The team coming in Fourth was another young team coming into this tournament, the AAYC Wildcats who finished 0-3. After the seeding by point differential we found the Ducks in first place led by the play of Wilson Lew. As the first seed in the "B" bracket, they faced the younger and smaller Young Life Rockits and defeated them by a score of 33 to 27. Coming in second were the feisty and tough, defensive minded Young Life Rockits who gave Kev's Posse a run for their money in the prelims. It was a close one but the Young Life Rockits came out with a victory and Kev's Posse with a loss 40-32. For Kev's Posse to secure the third seed, they had to beat the Ducks which we knew was going to be no easy task. It was a tough one, indeed, but the wiser and experienced Kev's Posse team took the game. Led by local playground legend Jimly Chong, who decided to take over with several minutes remaining in the game, they won a close one, 34-30.
Playoff time has finally begun for the
Summer Nights League. All teams this year have a chance to compete
in the playoffs and compete for the title. In the playoffs, brackets
will cross over so teams will have a chance to see some new faces.
The playoff race to the championship is set as the first seed
meets the fourth seed. The NY Rockits faced up against the baby
faced AAYC Wildcats and the first place Ducks against the Junior
Rockits. In front of a capacity crowd at Roosevelt Park the NY
Rockits had a clinic with the much younger AAYC Wildcats. The
NY Rockits AIA ran the Wild Cats out of the playoff race 62-11
led by the 30+ point performance by Brian Wong. After the Junior
Rockits were audience to the first game they told themselves that
this was not going to happen to them. So the second game of the
night deemed to be more interesting as the Junior Rockits got
ready to battle with the NY Ducks. It was a battle indeed, as
the Junior Rockits put the Ducks on their heels as they played
some hard nosed defense. To everyone's surprise the Junior Rockits
actually took charge of the game in the first half by securing
the lead. But things changed when the second half went underway.
The Ducks realized they were the much more experienced team. They
finally woke up and taught the younger Rockits a lesson not to
forget by coming out on top 45-27.
The next set of playoff games featured the older and wiser New
York Fishmen and the young and hungry Young Life Rockits followed
by the New York Free Agents versus Kev's Posse. The first game
of the night was a tight battle as the short handed younger Rockit
team were missing two key players for the night.. The Young Life
Rockits were still able to maintain a lead on the Fishmen most
of the game led by Junior Nationals MVP Kenny Yu (14 points) and
the precise free throw shooting of Ming Wang (10 points). The
Fishmen played catch up most of the night. But late in the second
half Ramon Wong took over by knocking down three key treys. The
last one Ramon Wong hit gave the Fishmen their first lead of the
night. From there on the lead went back and fourth till the very
end. The last minute proved to be the ultimate test as both teams
looked nervous. Kenny Yu hit a short jumper to take the lead briefly
at 34-32 but later the Fishmen forced a turnover and tied the
game up at 34-34. Coming back on the other end, Rockit Chris Chin
drew a 2 shot foul. After missing his first shot he calmly sank
the second, taking a one point lead. With seconds dwindling, the
Fishmen called time out and came up with a play to no prevail
as they turned the ball over for the Young Life Rockits to advance
to the semifinals. The last game of the night was no different.
A short-handed Kev's Posse (missing Jim Li and sharp shooter Danny
Chong) came out sharp and gained control of the game quickly.
Maintaining the lead the whole night the Posse got a little careless
late in the game and let the Free Agents back into the game. Playing
catch up all night long the Free Agents refused to give up. Using
their scrappy full court press to force some turnovers late in
the game the Posse saw an 8 point lead evaporate like water in
the sun. Time was still running out for the Agents forcing them
to foul. The Free Agents got within one point (30-29). But with
several quick pump fakes the whole gym heard the whistle from
the referee and a loud "YEAAA BABY!" come from Denny
Lee for being awarded two foul shots by drawing the foul to help
secure a semifinals appearance for Kev's Posse by beating the
tough Free Agents 32-29.

GAME - NY ROCKITS AIA 57 vs. NY CRUISERS
46
Written by Nelson Yu
We finally made it!
Yes folks. The final is finally underway. In this Championship
round, two of the best local teams faced off against one another.
It is the New York Rockits vs. the New York Cruisers. In this
game, both these teams were able to showcase their unique team
styles of play as well as each team members' individual raw talent
for all to see. This game promises to be an exciting one and an
exciting one it was indeed!
The Rockits made several key changes in their offense and their
defense to adjust to the style of play the Cruisers. Such maneuvers
proved useful down the stretch of the game. The Rockits jumped
out to a very early 10-point lead in the first half as Brian Wong
and David Scott buried trey after trey from beyond the arc. But
that lead would soon be forgotten as the Cruisers came roaring
back. The Cruisers gained a brief lead with some strong inside
play from their big man, George Chan #50, and some precision free
throw shooting by guard C.B. Liu, (combined 13 points). But at
the end of the first half, the Rockits would still be up by two
(23-21).
As the second half got underway, the defense of both teams tightened
drastically. All the high scorers of the first half for both teams
were shut down offensively. This was an excellent display of both
teams' defensive prowess throughout the tournament. The Cruisers
are well known for their superb and dominating low post play and
they didn't disappoint as they kept pounding it into their other
big man, Tony Hu (13 points). But the Cruisers are not the only
team with dominating inside play. The Rockits eventually utilized
their size as they pounded it down low to their big men, Ed Chan
(18 points) and Kevin Chin (12 points). The turning point of the
game came with just under three minutes to play when Victor Tang
threw several eye- popping assists to Ed Chan as he muscled in
for 5 consecutive lay-ups. The Cruisers couldn't answer the final
surge of the Rockits as the buzzer sounded. Congratulations to
both teams for a job well done!

The first game of the
night was played by the Rockits and the Sea Slugs. This game was
no contest to the Rockits, who steadily built up a lead as high
as 30 points and never looked back. The Sea Slugs had a very balanced
attack from their squad. But was not enough to overcome the 3
point shooting of their opponents. The Rockits' duo of guards
(Kwok and Brian) shot eight treys from behind the arc to aid in
their stunning 62-45 victory over the Sea Slugs.
7:45pm Bearcats 62, Skyhawks 44
Written By Nelson Yu
As for the second game of the night, the BearCats overcame a late
and strong charge by the SkyHawks and defeated them by a margin
of 62- 44. The BearCats started off the game strong with their
tough defense and fast break chances. But the SkyHawks woke up
late in the first half and made a huge come back with their own
tough defense and a very balanced attack by all memebers of the
team, bringing the game to within a couple of points. In the end
the BearCats prevailed led by the scoring touch of Jason Joa(30
points).

6:15pm Ducks-52, Sky Hawks-32
Written By Nelson Yu
The Ducks once again showed their dominance on the court in their
2nd consecutive victory. Led by the inside scoring of Damian (Kirby)
Shaw with 23 points, the Ducks beat the Sky Hawks by a score of
52-32. The Ducks pressuring defense caused the Sky Hawks' offense
to breakdown and forced crucial turnovers leading to the outcome
of this game.
7:05pm Da Bien-42, Sea Slugs-35
Written By Nelson Yu
In another exciting Summer Nights League game, this was one of
those hold your breath type of games - where both teams put up
an excellent fight to the end. Both sides showcased their offensive
and defensive skills. It was a tight game throughout but in the
end Da Bien prevailed with a small margin of victory, 42-35. The
scoring and dominating play of Shawn Reyes who exploded in the
second half with 16 pts. and several key treys led the way for
Da Bien. Leading the way for the Sea Slugs was Peter (#3) with
17 points.

6:45pm Rockits Y&O 64, Bearcats 63
Written By Nelson Yu
In one of the best-fought games of this season, the Rockits Y&O
outwitted the Bearcats by one point. The Bearcats with their experience
and size dominated a much smaller Rockits team in the first half
led by the tremendous inside play of Jason Joa. The Bearcats held
their lead throughout the first half. But in the second half,
the feisty Rockits woke up. The utilized their speed and pestering
defensive play to spark their fast break offense. Led by the scoring
of Richard (Helmet) San Pedro (18 points) and the balanced scoring
of the rest of the team, the Rockits came out on top with a very
tight, one point victory.

6:15pm NY Cruisers 50, NY Rockits AIA 46
Written By Nelson Yu
In one of the most anticipated games in this Summer Nights League,
the NY Rockits AIA and the Cruisers were matched up against one
another. Once again the Cruisers used their size to dominate most
of the game as they had in the past. The Cruisers were led by
the strong low post play of Tony Hu(#2) of the Cruisers who tallied
18 points. The NY Cruisers dominant inside presence allowed them
to hold a commanding lead throughout the game. But late in the
second half, the Rockits woke up. They were led by Kevin Chin
(14 points) and some crucial treys by their guards, Brian Wong
and Kwok Fung.

6:30pm Ducks -68 vs. Rockits Y/O-48
(make up game from
7/23)
Written By Nelson Yu
Tonight's game was
crucial for both teams. Entering this game, the Ducks and the
Rockits both held undefeated records of 2-0. But only one would
come out on top and hold soul possession of first place in their
division. From the start, you could tell that this younger Rockits
team was undersized and that difference finally caught up to them.
The continuing dominant play of Damian (Kirby) Shaw proved no
match for the smaller Rockits team as he pounded his way to double
digits. The Rockits fought a hard battle but to no prevail, falling
to the final score of 68-48.

the Seaslugs. The Ducks, coming off a strong victory the game
before, brought all their momentum into the playoffs. The Seaslugs
didin't disappoint as they also came ready to play as they were
led by the scoring touch of Bill Lee (14 points). To counter,
the Ducks were led by the superb shooting of guard Peter Mei and
the low post play of Damian (Kirby Shaw). Peter dialed up four
big treys to aid his team. Both Duck players tallied a total of
18 points each to lead their team to a resounding 59-47 victory.

6:15pm NY Cruisers 36 vs. DA BIEN 27(make
up game from 7/23)
Written by Nelson Yu
Tonight's game was
a duel between to very different teams. The Cruisers, a team that
exhibits an excellent half-court offense against Da Bien, a squad
that likes to run the fast break. Throughout this game, the Cruisers
displayed a very organized and patient offense by utilizing their
size inside. To counter, Da Bien used their speed, led by Shawn
Reyes with 20 out of the team's 27 points. But the Cruisers showed
that there is no "I" in TEAM. They were able to stop
the running game of their opponents and force them into playing
their patient half-court set. In the end the Cruisers fought off
Da Bien by the final score of 36-27. Thanks to some key free throws
by C.B. Liu who hit 6 for 6 from the line (12 points total).

In their first round
playoff game, the Cruisers beat the Skyhawks by a score of 65-40.
The Cruisers were led by the guard play of C.B. Liu (18 points)
and Warren C. (16 points). The Skyhawks countered with some excellent
three-point shooting by connecting on 6 treys throughout the game.
But in the end, the Cruisers proved that size matters most as
they out rebounded the Skyhawks on the offensive and defensive
ends of the court. The result was the Cruisers cruising past the
first round by 25 points.

vs. 3rd B (BEARCATS)

Written by Nelson

More playoff action was underway as the NY Rockits AIA squared
off against the Bearcats. In one of the more competitive playoff
games seen thus far, the Rockits managed to pull away in the end
and advance into the semifinals. The Rockits started the game
as sharp as can be. They were sparked by the shooting touches
of Dave Scott and Victor Tang, combining for 15 points in the
first half. But the Bearcats came into tonight's game ready for
action as they gave the Rockits a run for their money. They fought
hard and saw the lead go back and forth several times in the first
half. Leading the charge for the Bearcats was Yuming Li (14 points).
But in the second half, things changed. The Rockits tightened
up their defense and hit some big shots down the stretch to pull
off a victory.
7:05pm 3rd A (DA BIEN)
44 vs. 2nd B (YL
ROCKITS) 39
Written by Nelson Yu
YES! Playoff action gets even more exciting as we entered the
second game of the night. This game displayed two very talented,
young fast-breaking teams. Due to prior committments, the YL Rockits
missed some key players yet still managed to play tough and give
Da Bien a hard fought game. Tonight's battle was one of the closet
games played thus far in the tournament. At the start of the game,
the feisty Rockit guards took the rock hard to the hole. Guards
Chris "Doony" Chin and Jarvis "Nose" Miu (combined
28 points) forced Da Bien into early foul trouble. This aided
the YL Rockits tremendously as they built a lead that they maintained
throughout most of the first half. But the second half was a different
story as fatigue set in for the short handed Rockits team. The
game grew closer and closer as the Reyes brothers went on a scoring
spree (32 points). Da Bien eventually took a 3-4 point lead and
was able to hold off some late charges by the Rockits to advance
into the semifinals.

6:45pm Semifinals - NY ROCKITS AIA 58
vs. DUCKS 51
Written by Nelson Yu
The very first semi final of the night was underway as the Rockits
were set to face off against the Ducks. The tip off was thrown.
The whistle blew. The ball went into play. From there, the Rockits
took charge and never looked back. They jumped out to a very earlier
double-digit lead as all the Rockits managed to contribute to
the scoring. With such a balanced attack and some stifling man
to man defense, they were able to hold the Ducks at bay. The Ducks
managed to make some noise late in the second half led by Frankie
Li and Damian Kirby Shaw with a combined 34 points. Unfortunately,
time ran out, as the Rockits were able to advance into the finals
by a score of 58-51.
7:45pm Semifinals - NY CRUISERS 44vs.
DA BIEN 41
Written by Nelson
Yu
This particular semi final was nothing close to boring. It was
Da Bien vs. N.Y. Cruisers. When these two teams first faced off
in the regular season, the Cruisers came out on top. This time
around it seemed like a different story. Da Bien was ready to
redeem themselves as the jump ball started the game and this time
the tempo was in their hands. Again, Shawn Reyes displayed some
of his raw talent once again by leading the way with 20 points.
But raw talent was not enough as the Cruisers battled back and
took the lead, led by the inside dominance of Tony Hu and George
Chan (26 points). This was another "hold your breath"
type of game as the defense of Da Bien forced consecutive offensive
charging fouls to keep the game close. Time was never on Da Bien's
side as it ticked away forcing them to foul with several seconds
left and only down one point. The final foul put Cruiser guard
C.B. Liu on the line and he calmly drained a pair of free throws.
This sealed the game for the Cruisers as they advance with a 44-41
victory.
